Last Thursday, Google added Nano Banana 2, its generative image model, directly into Google Earth. A user could navigate to any location on the planet, type a sentence, and watch the model paint whatever they described onto authentic satellite imagery. Drone strikes on hospitals. Nuclear facilities in Iran. Refugee camps that do not exist. The fabrications looked like the real thing because they were composited into the real thing.

By Friday, Google pulled the feature. The statement said the company had seen people sharing screenshots that appeared to violate its policies and that it was rolling back the tool while implementing "stronger guardrails." The tool was live for approximately one day.

That day was enough.

The last unimpeachable image

Satellite imagery occupied a unique position in the hierarchy of visual evidence. Photographs can be staged. Video can be deepfaked. But a satellite image carried a kind of institutional gravity that other images did not, because the camera was in orbit and nobody could direct it. The image arrived from above, indifferent to whoever stood below. It did not have an angle. It did not have a filmmaker. It recorded what was there.

OSINT analysts used Google Earth to monitor conflict zones. Journalists used it to verify claims about infrastructure, troop movements, environmental destruction. International tribunals cited satellite imagery as evidence. Human rights organizations built entire investigative methodologies around the assumption that the view from above was the closest thing to ground truth available at scale.

Google spent two decades building that trust. Twenty years of consistent, unmanipulated satellite coverage. The product's value was not the resolution or the interface. The value was the assumption that what you saw was what was there.

Google torched that assumption in a product update and walked it back in a press statement.

The tool does not know what it is pointed at

This series has used that sentence about video generation models for a hundred and fifty articles. It applies to cinematographic vocabulary: the model cannot tell whether a reference image is a mood board or a dead actor's face. It applies to prompts: the model cannot distinguish between a filmmaker building atmosphere and a propagandist fabricating evidence.

Google Earth was different. Google Earth was not a generation tool. It was a documentation tool. Its purpose was observation, not creation. Adding a generation layer to an observation platform is not a feature addition. It is a category inversion. The tool that documented what existed was given the power to fabricate what did not.

An OSINT researcher named Nick Waters identified the problem within hours. A fabricated satellite image made with Google Earth looks identical to an authentic satellite image from Google Earth because it is composited into authentic satellite imagery from Google Earth. The context is real. The modification is generated. The seam is invisible.

This is not the legibility gap documented across this series, where generated output becomes indistinguishable from photographed output. This is something structurally worse: generated content embedded inside documented reality, wearing the documented reality's credentials.

SynthID cannot follow the screenshot

Google's response to concerns about misuse was SynthID, its digital watermarking system. Ars Technica tested it. The watermark survived edits when the file remained intact. It did not survive a smartphone photograph of a screen.

Fakes do not travel as clean files with their metadata intact. They travel as screen recordings, re-encodes, screenshots of screenshots, filmed off someone's phone in a hurry. SynthID protects the provenance of the original file. It does not protect the provenance of the information once it leaves the screen.

The EU AI Act's Article 50 took effect yesterday, requiring machine-readable markers on synthetic content. That regulation assumed the marking infrastructure would carry provenance from generation to consumption. Google's own test case demonstrated that the infrastructure fails at the most basic distribution vector: a phone camera pointed at a monitor.

The regulation arrived on Saturday. The evidence that its marking assumption was broken arrived on Thursday. Two days apart. Same company.

The retraction pattern

Google pulled the Google Earth feature within a day. Meta pulled its Instagram photo-tagging Muse Image feature within three days. OpenAI pulled Sora's consumer app within six months. The pattern is consistent: ship the capability, absorb the backlash, retract the interface, keep the model.

The model does not get retracted. Nano Banana 2 still lives in Google Flow, in the Gemini app, in YouTube Shorts. The capability to generate photorealistic imagery of real-world locations still exists. What got retracted was the specific interface that made fabrication as easy as navigating to a pin on a map and typing a sentence.

Google's statement left the door open. "We've seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes." The feature will return with guardrails. The guardrails will be content filters that block the most obvious misuse cases. The subtler ones will pass through, because content filters are keyword detectors and the vocabulary for describing "bomb crater in a hospital parking lot" can be rephrased into language that sounds like urban planning research.

The pattern reveals a specific theory about responsibility: the tool is fine, the interface was too easy, and the solution is friction, not removal. That theory holds for creative tools where the worst outcome is bad art. It does not hold for evidentiary infrastructure where the worst outcome is fabricated proof of events that never occurred.

Two rooms, one week

The EU AI Act took effect on Saturday. The regulation draws a line between synthetic content (label it) and editorially controlled content (exempt). That line assumes the output exists in a knowable context. A filmmaker generates a clip, reviews it, publishes it with or without a label depending on editorial involvement. The provenance chain is traceable.

Google Earth broke the chain before the regulation finished its first weekend. The fabricated satellite images do not announce themselves as synthetic content. They announce themselves as Google Earth, a platform whose entire credibility rests on not being synthetic. The regulation's disclosure framework assumes the publisher knows the content is AI-generated. A journalist who screenshots a Google Earth view does not know a previous user generated a crater on that view. The fabrication lives in the map. The screenshot inherits the map's authority.

The regulation measures the publisher's intent. The fabrication exploits the platform's trust. These are not the same surface. The regulation watches the door. The fabrication came through the foundation.

What this means for filmmakers

This series documents the gap between filmmaker knowledge and model comprehension. The vocabulary is the durable asset. The tools are neutral. The neutrality is not a disclaimer. It is the central fact.

Nano Banana 2 is a CinePrompt-supported image generation model. Filmmakers use it to build reference frames, seed images for Frame to Motion workflows, and develop visual concepts. That use is legitimate, creative, and falls cleanly inside the editorial exemption of every institutional framework on the gradient.

The same model, embedded in Google Earth, becomes something else entirely. Not because the model changed. Because the context changed. A reference image generated in Google Flow carries the authority of a creative workflow. A modified satellite image generated in Google Earth carries the authority of planetary observation.

The filmmaker's vocabulary does not change across these contexts. The stakes do. This series has argued for a hundred and fifty articles that the tool does not know what it is pointed at. Google just pointed the tool at the last unmanipulated image the public trusted, and the tool did what it always does. It generated what was described.

The Odyssey crossed seven hundred million dollars worldwide this week. Zero AI. The audience paid for the resistance of the physical world captured on IMAX 70mm. Satellite imagery carried a similar authority: the resistance of the real world, captured from orbit, unmediated by human direction. That resistance was the value. Google replaced it with accommodation.

The feature lasted a day. The question of whether you can trust what you see on Google Earth will last longer. Nineteen institutional frameworks on the gradient, and the newest one, the EU's, arrived on Saturday to discover that the evidentiary infrastructure it was built to protect had already been compromised by a product update on Thursday.

The map was the territory. Now the map generates its own territory. And the person holding the phone cannot tell the difference.
